An AI receptionist seller went from $3-5k deals to zero in a year as CRMs built it in for free

Worth knowing before you pay big for setup: your software may already include it.

What they did

u/UnusualAd3207 started a business early on, setting up AI receptionists that answered missed and after-hours calls and booked appointments, mostly for med spas and home service companies.

How it went

Cheap copycat tools appeared, then CRMs and business phone systems added AI call answering as a built-in feature. Clients churned to free options. He pivoted to selling just the setup and prompt work, then tools appeared that write those prompts for you. He says he went from closing multiple $3,000-5,000 deals a week to almost zero within about a year.

Worth knowing

Before paying a big setup fee, check whether your CRM or phone system (Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan, your VoIP provider) already has AI answering. Pay for results and a good setup, not the novelty.

Try it yourself

You are a no-nonsense software buyer's advisor for a small trades business. TASK: Help me compare AI phone answering options before I sign anything. CONTEXT (fill in the [BRACKETS]): - MY CURRENT SOFTWARE: [MY CURRENT SOFTWARE] (example: Housecall Pro, RingCentral) - QUOTE I GOT: [QUOTE I GOT] (example: $3,500 setup + $400/mo) - MISSED CALLS PER WEEK: [MISSED CALLS PER WEEK] (example: about 15) - AVERAGE JOB VALUE: [AVERAGE JOB VALUE] (example: $450) STEPS: 1. List what to check in my current software for built-in AI answering, and where to look. 2. Write 8 questions to ask any vendor (contract length, cancel terms, who owns the call data, human handoff, booking into my calendar). 3. Do the math: what recovered calls per month pays for the quote. 4. Recommend start-small options. RULES: - Use only the facts I give you. If something is missing, ask or mark it NEEDED. Never invent prices, names or promises. - Plain, friendly language a customer or crew member understands. OUTPUT FORMAT: Checklist, vendor questions, a simple break-even line, recommendation. FOLLOW-UPS TO TRY NEXT: - Write a polite email asking the vendor for a 30-day month-to-month trial. - What results should I track in the first 30 days?
