A builder asked Claude to read construction drawings. The best advice: build a text index first
AI is weakest reading dense drawings as images. Pull out the notes and schedules as text first.
What they did
u/marshall1727 had a full PDF drawing set and needed a written technical report describing materials and methods, and asked whether anyone had Claude write one from drawings.
How it went
A commenter said models don't carry context across sheets and are weakest reading symbol-heavy PDFs as images. What worked for them: split the set into sheets, pull out general notes, schedules and specs as text (most CAD PDFs have a real text layer), and build a short index of what's on each sheet. Then ask questions, and only go back to a drawing image when needed.
Worth knowing
Same rule for bids and takeoffs: give AI the text (specs, schedules, notes) and an index, and check every quantity yourself.

Quotes that took him an hour per 10 now come out with datasheets in about 15 minutes.
It got there only because he gave it every variable. Others report about 70% accuracy on AI takeoffs.
A skeptic's view: entering everything into the AI is the same work as writing the quote.
One uses an estimating tool with built-in AI takeoff that saves him hours, but warns never to replace estimator instincts.
